According to History.com, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated annually on March 17, the anniversary of Saint Patrick's death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over 1,000 years and have been observing the Roman Catholic feast day of St. Patrick since around the ninth or 10th century.

As you're replenishing school supplies for the last few months of school, remember to save your receipts. The Minnesota Department of Revenue offers two valuable tax benefits for parents who purchase school supplies for their K-12 students: the K-12 Education Credit and Subtraction. These benefits can reduce parents’ taxes to increase their refund, but is only available for those who keep their receipts. Purchases for most school supplies, field trips, and musical instruments for school band are eligible. Most Minnesota parents qualify for the K-12 subtraction, which reduces their taxable income. Parents under certain income limits may also qualify for the K-12 credit, which can refund up to 75% of their costs – even for parents who do not owe any taxes. Learn more about income requirements and qualifications on the Child Tax Credit webpage: https://www.revenue.state.mn.us/child-tax-credit The tax credit of up to $1750 per child is estimated to cut child poverty by up to one-third in Minnesota. This week is National School Counseling Week. Our counselors work with all students to remove barriers to learning by helping students apply academic achievement strategies, manage emotions, build interpersonal skills, support mental health needs, and plan for post-secondary options. No counselor’s job is the same because they adapt so well to what is needed from our students and schools as a whole. Thank you, counselors, for all you do in Rochester Public Schools!
